It is not true that Qin Shi Huang, 259 B.C - 210 B.C, who was the king of the Chinese state of Qin burned the books and scholars of confucianism. At the era many books were written by a lot of citizens in the various way of chinese. Qin Shi Huang tried to unify the language of the books, and removed the books written in inappropriate way. It means the purpose of burning the books was not for the restriction on the philosophy. He even regarded highly of the classical chinese of some books of confucianism.
On the other hand, the burned scholars were not the scholars of confucianism. The king look for the medicine to live forever, and order them to make it. Some of them, however, criticised the king's desire, and run away. The king got anger of the behaviour, and investigated all the scholars to find the betrayers. Eventually a several handred of the scholars were killed. In the some history books it is written that they are kill because they were the scholars of confucianism.
Of curse, it is easier to understand that the king tried to control the philosophy, and burned the books and scholars of confucianism, but the fact is a little more complecated.
